Solar Impulse is a project to build a solar-powered long-range glider. The driving force behind the project is the Swiss aeronaut Bertrand Piccard who holds many aviation records to his name. The project is currently in the design phase, with scientific studies of materials and design being done by the Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. However the main partner and sponsor has recently been announced and it is Omega. The wing-span of the finished Solar Impulse is said to be 80 meters which is the same as a Airbus A-380 super jumbo.
